Two just-married Venetian gondoliers, Giuseppe and Marco, are informed by Don Alhambra del Bolero, the Grand Inquisitor, that one of them has just become the King of a far-away island country called “Barataria”.  Unfortunately, no one seems to know which of the two brothers is the actual King.  Only the former foster mother can identify which was given to her care as an infant by the former King (with a little memory prompting provided by Don Alhambra’s torture chamber).

Giuseppe and Marco are convinced by Don Alhambra to leave their new wives and journey to Barataria to rule jointly until this matter of identity is resolved.  Shortly thereafter we find out that the unidentified King was wed to Casilda, the daughter of the Duke of Plaza Toro, when both were but infants.  The Duke and Duchess of Plaza Toro have journeyed to Venice to proclaim the marriage but find they will now have to travel to Barataria to discover the true King’s identity.  Casilda, in the meantime, reveals to us that she is secretly in love with her servant, Luis.  All the parts are now in place for the second act of The Gondoliers to begin.

In the ‘republican’ run court of Barataria, we find the group of displaced gondoliers and the two kings longing for their wives while they attend to the day to day chores of running their Kingdom.  Gianetta and Tessa, who also long for their husbands, have convinced all the contadine (peasant women) to come with them to Barataria and surprise the men.  The celebration of reunited couples is interrupted by Don Alhambra who informs the two kings that one of them, of course we know not which, is already married to Casilda.  About this time, the Duke, Duchess, Casilda and Luiz arrive and all is topsy turvy until Inez, the prince’s foster mother, is brought forth to identify the real King of Barataria.  All end happily although you will have to stay and watch the show to find out how!!
